As students return to school in Sacramento, the city is increasing efforts to improve road safety both near schools and throughout the capital by addressing speeding. Sacramento has partnered with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), and local group Slow Down Sacramento to launch the "Slow the Fast Down" campaign, a statewide initiative to reduce vehicle speeds on public roads, as Sacramento City Express reports.

Speed-related accidents, a major cause of serious and fatal crashes, have led Sacramento to intensify its Vision Zero mission, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries within the city. The initiative focuses on high-risk areas such as Folsom Boulevard, known for incidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists. These locations will see new traffic-calming measures, including updated curb ramps, protected left turns, and rapid implementation of street safety improvements as part of the city’s Transportation Safety Initiative. This collaborative effort is intended to create a safer environment for residents.

Backing these preventative strategies, the Sacramento Police Department recently acquired a substantial grant from OTS, totaling $400,000, steered at ongoing enforcement and educational campaigns that take dead aim at precarious driving behaviors including but not limited to speeding, illegal street racing, and disruptive sideshows.

This month marks a significant anniversary for the local grassroots organization Slow Down Sacramento, which is celebrating its second year focused on promoting safer roads. The organization’s founder, Isaac Gonzalez, called on the community to take responsibility for safer streets, saying, "Our organization is about community and a call to act to foster a culture of safe, respectful and courteous driving behaviors within Sacramento," as he told Sacramento City Express. The campaign combines enforcement with education, delivering its message through various channels—including PSAs on YouTube, gaming platforms, social media, and physical advertisements—emphasizing that driving slower saves lives. OTS Director Stephanie Dougherty highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating, "Speeding is dangerous and puts everyone on the road at risk," particularly highlighting the need to protect young people as the community intensifies efforts to raise road safety awareness.
