A tragic accident on the West Side of San Antonio has left a family in mourning and a community in shock after a 6-year-old boy was struck and fatally injured by a driver. The San Antonio Police Department reported that the young boy, identified as Axel Aurelio Hernandez, was playing with a toy car that inadvertently took him into the street where he was hit by the truck. According to KTSA, the collision occurred on the 400 block of Amires Place.
The male driver, whose truck was recorded on a neighbor's doorbell camera, immediately stopped to render aid and assist the child until the Emergency Medical Services arrived. Despite attempts to save his life, police say that the boy unfortunately died shortly after arriving at the hospital. In a statement obtained by KENS 5, a neighbor mentioned her boyfriend's effort to immediately run out and perform CPR on young Axel.
The driver, who is currently not facing any charges for the incident, reportedly told authorities he did not see Axel and that he was not driving too quickly, a detail corroborated by the police and neighbors who spoke with KENS 5. The aftermath of the accident has rippled through the close-knit community, leading to an outpouring of support and a vigil held by the family at the site of the crash only a day later.
Relatives of Axel, Edward and Mary Jane Rodriguez, expressed their grief and asked for prayers not only for their family but also for the driver of the truck. "It’s just a tragedy what happened," Edward said in a statement obtained by KENS 5. With understanding of the emotional toll such an event takes on all involved, they urged the community to "pray for him too, pray he can get through this because he took a life and that's pretty hard," Edward added. To cover funeral expenses, loved ones have begun to raise money, supporting the Rodriguez family in their time of need.
