A high-speed pursuit initiated in Atascosa County surged through a 40-mile stretch to San Antonio, landing a local man behind bars on several charges. The chase kicked off following a burglary report at a property that has seen its share of break-ins. According to KSAT, authorities responded to an alleged theft at around 6:30 p.m. last Saturday in the 5300 block of Farm-to-Market 541.
Upon deputies' arrival, 41-year-old Roman Gomez allegedly busted through a fence with a pickup truck and trailer, instigating a chase along FM 541 and onto Interstate 37. The gotten-away on rims vehicle echoed a determination to evade, as spike strips were deployed four times to hinder his escape. "Gomez continued driving on the rims of the truck," a deputy chief told KSAT.
The pursuit extended into other jurisdictions, requiring the assistance of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Pleasanton Police Department. The chase saw an end near Loop 410 and Presa Street when Gomez's vehicle crashed after coming into contact with a DPS trooper's patrol car. The Pleasanton Express reported that despite these setbacks, Gomez attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by an Atascosa County deputy.
For these actions, Gomez faces multiple charges including evading arrest in a motor vehicle and burglary of a building. "Gomez may face additional charges for offenses committed in Atascosa and Bexar counties as the investigation continues," according to the KSAT report. In addition, an existing warrant for Gomez's arrest from Bexar County surfaced for possession of a controlled substance. Atascosa County Sheriff Jake Guerra expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort from multiple departments in bringing the pursuit to a halt.
