An altercation unfolded at the Edgewood ISD board meeting when Maribel Gardea, a 42-year-old mother and local community member, refused to leave the podium after her speaking time had concluded. As body cameras rolled and parents watched, KSAT 12 reports that Gardea, who was addressing the board about concerns regarding bullying and security within the school district, continued to speak even after being told her time was up. Her action led to the police intervention that saw her escorted and handcuffed.
Further highlighting the incident's details, News 4 San Antonio noted that the situation had escalated, with Gardea being charged with criminal trespass, disrupting a meeting or procession, and resisting arrest. The district has been under scrutiny from concerned parents who believe their voices and worries are being overlooked. One such parent, Agapita Jaramillo, a retired Edgewood employee, unsatisfied with the district's performance, asserted that "Our district has a decrease in enrollment, has a decrease in attendance, and we have a rate of D, and we've had that rating for five years, and that is unacceptable."
In response to the growing discontent, parents have begun to organize. A petition demanding immediate changes to restore transparency and ensure the safety of the district's establishments has quickly garnered support. Jessica Rodriguez, another parent involved, highlighted the community's unity: "More than 120 signatures already, and that's because we just started a couple weeks ago. But we really are coming together as a community," she told News 4 San Antonio.
To insists on addressing these pressing issues, parents have committed themselves to continue their presence at meetings. The superintendent of Edgewood ISD acknowledged ongoing challenges, agreeing that "there is space to grow." He explained the circumstances surrounding Gardea's removal during the board meeting: "The individual’s actions were not in alignment with the EISD Board Operating Procedures and Code of Ethics, necessitating their removal. Edgewood ISD is committed to fostering a respectful and inclusive environment where all voices can be heard," as per an official statement obtained by News 4 San Antonio.
