In a case that has gripped the community of Middleburg, a 14-year-old boy stands accused of the grim act of fatally shooting his parents last week in their home. As reported by Action News Jax, Trevor Lee has been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder and will be prosecuted as an adult, the State Attorney's Office confirmed.
The indictment was handed down by a Clay County grand jury, moving the case quickly towards an adult courtroom. Lee's next court appearance is on the docket for August 19 at 9 a.m., as per the State Attorney’s Office. In detailing the incident, First Coast News revealed that the Clay County Sheriff's Office found the victims, 44-year-old David Lee and 45-year-old Brandi Smith, deceased in their bedroom on August 4.
It was after making a 30-minute walk to CrossPointe Church in Fleming Island that Trevor Lee made the 911 call, according to details provided by News 4 Jax. The Clay County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Michelle Cook reported that what seems to have been an argument Sunday night escalated to the deadly shooting.
The gravity of this situation is heightened by the fact that the alleged murder weapon belonged to the couple, as Sheriff Cook indicated. Statements from the investigation and Trevor Lee's subsequent 911 call have been heavily redacted to protect the integrity of the prosecution. The dispatcher, who spoke with Trevor Lee until law enforcement arrived, assured him the responding deputies were instructed not to point their guns at him upon arrival, "She can be heard telling a nervous Trevor that the deputies had been asked not to point guns at him when they got to the church," as described by News 4 Jax.
