Texans looking to stretch their dollars on back-to-school shopping can mark their calendars for a break from state and local sales taxes. From August 8 through 10, shoppers can purchase select clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks tax-free, as long as each item is priced below $100. This respite from sales taxes, not just in physical stores but also from online and catalog businesses serving Texan consumers, presents an opportunity for families to fully stock up without the added financial burden of taxes, the City of Arlington announced.
The initiative aims to not just support shoppers but also boost local businesses, encouraging a surge in spending during this limited-time event. However, shoppers need to be aware that only those purchases made within this window qualify for the tax exemption. If they choose to easily forget to make their purchases in time, they'll find themselves paying the regular taxes on these goods, as the exemption won't apply before August 8 or after August 10.
For the tax-free weekend, the list of eligible items includes essentials like clothing, face masks, footwear, and school supplies such as pens, pencils, and notebooks. In addition, backpacks designed for use by elementary and secondary students are exempt from taxes during this period.
Online shopping offers convenience, but it's important for consumers to carefully consider their purchases to ensure they qualify for the tax exemption. If a shopper enters their credit card information on a website at 5:00 p.m. on the final day of the tax holiday to buy school supplies, but the delivery isn't scheduled until after the event ends, the purchase should still qualify for the tax break. However, as stated by the City of Arlington, "if the charge to your credit card is declined by the payment processor at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday Aug. 10, 2025 and the purchaser does not resubmit payment until Monday Aug. 11, the purchase is taxable."
