Residents of St. Petersburg, mark your calendars and take this opportunity to declutter responsibly. The city has announced it will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, to help you safely dispose of those pesky, potentially dangerous items you can't just toss in the trash. Set for Saturday, September 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the environmentally-conscious event will take place at St. Petersburg College - Allstate Center, located at 3200 34th St. S.
According to the City of St. Petersburg's press release, this initiative is a chance for St. Petersburg locals to hand off items that, could be a fire risk or a harm to the environment if discarded improperly. The list of acceptable items includes everyday substances like antifreeze, gasoline, a range of household chemicals, oils, and paint products among others.
Remember, certain items are not destined for the regular curbside pickup, like mercury-containing devices and rechargeable batteries. During the event, attendees are encouraged to bring such items to be taken care of by specialists, ensuring they don't end up causing harm to our soil, water, or air. And, if you're among the many who find themselves with an obsolete signal flare from your boat, bring that along, too.
The city is making a concerted effort through events like these to encourage residents to consider the environmental implications of how they dispose of hazardous household items, and the response so far has been positive.
