Amid the usual suburban bustle, Sterling Heights Fire Station #1 is now sporting a new look that goes beyond functional to flirt with the aesthetic, thanks to a recently unveiled public art installation. On Wednesday, the city's Mayor Michael Taylor, alongside council members, presided over the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the backlit artwork adorning the station's clock tower at 38911 Van Dyke Ave. The colorful installation features a mix of patriotic and service-oriented symbols, including the fire department's badge, the American flag, and silhouettes of firefighters, according to the City of Sterling Heights.

With the vibrant display, the installation invites onlookers to consider the valor and commitment of local firefighters while providing a refreshing visual enhancement to the area. The project, commissioned by the Sterling Heights Arts Commission, taps into the city's broader scheme to sprinkle beauty and distinction throughout public spaces, fostering a deeper sense of place amid urban sprawl.

Local designer Leslie Dorchen, who holds degrees in interior and architectural design and brings over a quarter-century of experience to the table, was the creative force behind this infusion of color and symbolism into the fire station's façade. "I wanted to include the fire department’s patch and the American flag in the design, because firefighters are American heroes, and I wanted to honor that with the graphic treatment I used for this piece," Dorchen stated, referencing ties to the structure her father helped create back in 2002. Her work intertwines personal legacy with civic pride, giving the installation a backstory that's both poignant and powerful, per the City of Sterling Heights.
