The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau recently delved into a grim case of suspected foul play after Sheylla Cabrera, a 33-year-old Palmdale resident, was reported missing by the Lancaster Station on August 12. According to a press release from the LASD, a subsequent investigation pointed to unsettling evidence when surveillance footage showed the missing woman's husband, Jossimar Cabrera, hauling what appeared to be a large, shrouded object from their apartment complex. On the heels of this discovery, Sheylla's three children were also reported missing, triggering a coordinated search effort that spanned the rugged terrains of the Angeles National Forest.
With help from search and rescue teams in Crescenta Valley, Altadena, and Montrose, officials launched an extensive search on August 13 across the Angeles National Forrest. At the same time, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department alerted the Mexican and Peruvian consulates, concerned that the suspect might have fled abroad. Last Saturday, the case took a turn when the three Cabrera children were located in Peru, unharmed, and placed in protective custody.
That same day, the Montrose Mountain Search and Rescue Team reported spotting an object resembling the one seen in surveillance footage along an embankment in the national forest. Investigators responded and confirmed their worst fears: materials at the site were concealing the body of Sheylla Cabrera. The coroner later confirmed her death. As per the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the cause of death remains under investigation by the County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of murder charges against Jossimar Cabrera and to obtain the documents required for his return to the United States. Cabrera is believed to be in Peru as the investigation continues.
