The aftermath of a tragic school bus accident that claimed the life of 5-year-old Finn Katona in January continues to reverberate through Sussex, with the boy's parents releasing new video footage and pushing for systemic changes. In the video, disclosed by the Katonas through their attorney, children are seen navigating a packed sidewalk - described as "a concrete island, surrounded by moving buses" - in what the family has termed a chaotic transfer process. According to FOX6Now, their statement highlighted the environment, which they believe contributed to their son's untimely death, stating, "The unsafe atmosphere included too many children walking in opposite directions, on a concrete island, surrounded by moving buses."
While the school year recommences, the bereaved parents urge vigilance amongst fellow guardians; they encourage proactive communication with school bodies to better understand and possibly witness the logistics of students' commuting, especially the bus transfer procedures that directly impact the young ones' well-being, as reported by WISN. Their statement read, "We encourage parents to voice their concerns, ask questions and, if necessary, see for themselves the policies and procedures—such as bus drop-off, pick-up, and transfers—that directly affect their children's safety."
In addition to their call to action, there is news of impending litigation; the Katonas plan to file a civil suit against the Hamilton School District and the Dairyland Bus Company as informed by their legal representative. As stated in CBS 58, the family's attorney expressed dissatisfaction with the characterization of the event as merely an accident, pointing fingers at the alleged negligence resulting in the unsafe conditions that allegedly led to the boy's passing. The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department's investigation concluded with no charges against the bus driver, further stirring frustration regarding accountability.
The school district has since modified its bus transfer protocols in the wake of the incident, a slew of unforeseen consequences unraveling from an occurrence the family asserts could have been averted, their attorney conveyed to CBS 58, "our hearts ache every day without him." So far, the Hamilton School District has declined to comment, and Dairyland Bus Company hasn’t responded to questions.
