Residents in the Tampa Bay area are bracing for a sweltering Saturday with a heat advisory in effect, as temperatures are set to soar alongside high humidity levels. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an advisory early this morning, warning of heat index values reaching up to 109 degrees. According to the NWS report, the advisory spans from 11 AM to 7 PM EDT, covering a significant portion of west central Florida.
The brunt of the heat is expected to be felt in various locales including Lakewood Ranch, Cedar Key, and Clearwater, among others. "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," the NWS cautioned. Outdoor activities should probably be postponed as the risk for heat-related illnesses will likely increase throughout the day.
The NWS also forecasts mostly sunny conditions today, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms primarily between 4 PM and 5 PM. Yet despite the possibility of rain, the scorching heat remains the main concern. With a high chance of precipitation at 60% and potential new rainfall amounts ranging from a tenth to a quarter of an inch—possibly higher in thunderstorms—the humidity is set to ominously complement the day's high temperatures.
For tonight, Tampa Bay residents can expect a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 AM, followed by a slight chance of showers between 2 AM and 3 AM. The sky will likely be mostly cloudy, with a low around 78 degrees.
Tampa Bay's weekly outlook doesn't offer much reprieve, with daily predictions of high temperatures near 95 degrees and frequent chances for thunderstorms. Residents are urged to take proactive measures daily to avoid heat stress and to pay close attention to weather updates.
