In a move to score points for community interaction, the Tampa Police Athletic League (PAL) will be hosting a two-day basketball tournament with officers donning the coach’s whistle. The players, kids aged between 12 and 14, are prepping for some serious hoop action under the tutelage of Tampa’s finest, according to Tampa's official website.
Tampa PAL’s event is set to be more than just a dribble and shoot fest, it’s a nod towards the power of mentorship, and the role the police can play beyond their beats. "This basketball tournament is a literal example of community policing in action," Chief Lee Bercaw shine a spotlight on the initiative, and, also invites spectators to witness the positive influence officers can have beyond traditional law enforcement roles.
For those who prefer the smell of the gym to the officer’s patrol car, the playoffs kick off tomorrow at the PAL’s own court on Diana Street, doors crack open at 6:00 pm, with the game starting at 6:30 pm. The real nail-biting happens on Thursday, August 7th with the championships tipped off at 7:15 pm sharp.
No need to snag tickets since the event is free and open for anyone to come out, support the community, and maybe get a lesson in sportsmanship alongside the up-and-coming athletes. And for those whose game isn’t complete without the accompanying munchies, the PAL concession stand will be serving up snacks and drinks. Get ready to cheer, the Tampa Police Athletic League is aiming to basket community spirit and positivity in spades.
