Raymone Debose, involved in the fatal shooting of Oakland County Sheriff's Deputy Bradley Reckling last summer, has been issued a hefty prison sentence. Debose, who was 19 at the time of sentencing, accepted a plea agreement, admitting guilt to charges of first-degree murder and felony firearm. In accordance with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office statement and as reported by WWJ Newsradio, Debose's prison stint will span 33-60 years for the murder, in addition to a consecutive two-year term for the firearms charge, with a credit for 267 days already served.
Last June, Debose's actions irrevocably altered many lives, taking a husband and father from his family, and leaving Oakland County's law enforcement community in mourning. Working with the sheriff's office's stolen vehicle unit, Deputy Reckling was in pursuit of an Equinox stolen from Red Oaks Waterpark when he was gunned down. Deputy Reckling’s mother, amidst the trial, expressed her dissatisfaction with the sentence, asserting that Debose would be freed at a younger age than she is currently, according to a courthouse interview obtained by Audacy's WWJ, which demonstrates a stark contrast to the peace officer’s life sentence of absence from his family.
The two others implicated, Marquis Goins and Karim Moore, have previously been sentenced. As per reports by FOX 2 Detroit, Goins received an 8-30 year sentence after he pled guilty to carjacking and other charges, while Moore, who was found in the stolen vehicle but denied firing any shots, faces 5-20 years following his own plea.
In court, Debose alleged the fatal shooting was unintended because he had not planned to kill Reckling, stating, "If I knew that he was a cop, I would have just ran," according to related court coverage from FOX 2 Detroit. The impact of Deputy Reckling's murder resonated deeply during the trial, with his wife Jacqueline delivering a victim impact statement that Debose's criminal history signifies a pattern rather than an isolated mistake. "Brad’s death was not an accident. It wasn’t the result of youthful recklessness or poor judgment. The defendant took a gun, aimed it at Brad, and pulled the trigger, fully intending to end his life," Jacqueline Reckling told the court, as per the information given by ClickOnDetroit.
