In a spotlight feature on Philadelphia's official website, Marissa Ballew, a Temple University senior, shared her experiences as part of the Mayor's Internship Program, a public sector initiative that equips young individuals like Ballew with practical skills and networking opportunities to shape their budding professional journeys.
Ballew, a psychology major with minors in Criminal Justice and Art, has always been intent on making a difference in people's lives. According to the city's official website, Ballew said, "Most of my life has been on the sidelines. We learn before we do, and the process of growing up is almost entirely learning." She noted the significance of her transition into adulthood, emphasizing her readiness to apply her acquired knowledge through action.
Her stint at the government has enabled Ballew to be involved in various facets of administrative work, particularly through her placement with the Office of Talent and Employee Success. She expressed surprise at how her role unexpectedly aligned with her longer-term ambitions by offering transferable skills crucial for her desired career in criminal justice or non-profit work.
The program has also allowed Ballew to engage with city leaders, nurturing her communication abilities. "My favorite opportunity so far has been interviewing City leaders for the bi-weekly intern update," Ballew told the city's website, further stating how such tasks have honed her writing and professional speaking skills. Assisting with diverse daily tasks, she has quickly adapted to the dynamic nature of city government work, where, according to Ballew, "the only constant in city government is change."
Ballew's aspirations reach beyond the confines of city hall to potentially include investigative roles at the federal level or working with organizations that assist individuals affected by the criminal justice system. Despite her youth, her experience through the Mayor’s Internship Program has vested her with connections and confidence, crucial for the journey ahead. In gratitude for her experience at MIP, Ballew expressed, "I am excited to see where I go next," as noted by the City of Philadelphia.
