In response to President Donald J. Trump's declaration of a national energy emergency on January 20, the Department of the Interior has signaled its readiness to prepare an environmental impact statement for the expansion of Black Butte Coal Company's mining operations in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. The move, intended to solidify American energy independence, intends to provide a burst to both the economy and the nation's energy grid by accessing an additional estimated 9.2 million tons of federal coal reserves and extend the mine's operation until at least 2039, as reported by the Department of the Interior.
"The Trump administration is cutting bureaucratic red tape and putting American energy back where it belongs—at the center of a strong and sovereign nation," Adam Suess, Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management, remarked on the Department of the Interior, highlighting the commitment to position American coal at the epicenter of the nation's power strategy. The project is aligned with Executive Order 14261, titled “Reinvigorating America’s Beautiful Clean Coal Industry.” The proposed mining plan modification will disrupt approximately 450 acres for the development of Pits 10 and 15 under Federal Coal Lease WYW-6266. This expansion is not just about coal—it’s also envisioned as a means to empower the grid and prioritize American workers.
Efforts to expedite this high-priority project have resulted in the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement announcing it will complete its environmental review in a mere 28 days, setting a brisk pace for permitting processes in the current administration's effort to propel domestic energy sources forward. A public scoping meeting has been slated for 5:30-7:30 p.m. MDT on August 18, accessible virtually through Zoom with an option to phone in, providing an opportunity for stakeholders and the community to engage and voice opinions on the upcoming mine development.
