For the second consecutive day, Michigan State Police are delving into a Detroit-area freeway shooting incident. Late Tuesday, along I-275, near where it crosses paths with I-94 in Romulus, two individuals found themselves under gunfire while inside a moving vehicle, WWJ Newsradio reports. Those injured included a 35-year-old man who was driving and a 23-year-old Harper Woods man in the front passenger seat. Both sustained non-life-threatening wounds.
Despite the chaos, the driver managed to steer across the median onto the northbound side for emergency treatment at Corewell Health Taylor Hospital, previously known as Oakwood Hospital, located in Taylor. As per a FOX 2 Detroit interview, the 911 distress call was initially dropped, and upon redial by emergency services, the connection was lost once more. Thereafter, dispatched troopers interviewed all four vehicle occupants at the hospital, who confirmed the violence that erupted on the southbound route from I-94. While MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw stated, "This investigation is ongoing as troopers attempt to determine what occurred," contrasting accounts from those involved described the shooter's vehicle positioning variably from the passenger and driver sides.
The incident, which led to the temporary closure of the freeway as officers collected evidence, added to a disturbing trend. Just less than a day prior, another shooting incident on a Detroit freeway involved a Redford Township woman on I-96. Moreover, Detroit has seen a spate of freeway shootings in recent months, including one where two Detroit men suffered gunshot wounds on eastbound I-96 and another where a River Rouge woman was targeted on I-75, The Detroit News articulates.
During the aftermath at Corewell Health Taylor Hospital, troopers took accounts from the wounded and the unharmed backseat passengers. "Troopers will continue speaking with the passengers in the vehicle and doing on-scene investigative work," Shaw noted, per FOX 2 Detroit. The authorities are urging anyone with information related to this incident to come forward and make contact with the Michigan State Police at 855-MICH-TIP.
