Tragedy struck in Lincoln Park, Michigan, when two young pedestrians were hit by a vehicle while crossing the street. The incident occurred yesterday around 1:45 p.m. at the intersection of Fort Street and Emmons Boulevard. According to WWJ Newsradio, the victims were middle-school-aged children expected to survive, currently listed in critical but stable condition at Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital.
The local community has expressed deep concern for the condition of the children, who were struck in broad daylight. As per details provided by ClickOnDetroit, both kids, teen cousins ages 15 and 13, are in the ICU at Children's Hospital in downtown Detroit. Witnesses claimed that the boys may have attempted to cross the street against the light, which was green for oncoming traffic. "Flip-flops and clothing on the ground mark the exact spot where the boys were hit," said Bob Turkowski, a witness to the harrowing aftermath.
The driver involved in the incident reportedly stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the police. The investigation led to the temporary shutdown of a portion of Fort Street as officers and first responders attended to the situation. "We did hear it was a woman, I believe. We have no knowledge of who the person is," Christopher Walker, the father of the 15-year-old, told ClickOnDetroit.
There has been a vocal concern from neighbors over the driving behaviors in the area. "They go overboard. They go way too fast through here," Shawn Clapper told CBS Detroit, pointing out that speed is a constant problem on Fort Street. While advocating for better traffic control measures, Clapper added, "They need to put more lights, and they need to slow down ... They're just flying too fast." After witnessing dozens of cop cars and witnessing the immediate response to the accident, Clapper offered his thoughts for the affected family: "It's a tragedy." As of now, authorities have not made a statement regarding whether the driver will face any charges.
