In what's being touted as a significant move to shield U.S. agriculture, the USDA has launched its most comprehensive initiative against the New World Screwworm (NWS). House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington showed explicit support for the plan during an announcement at the Texas State Capitol. The program entails establishing a new sterile fly facility in South Texas, an offensive against the pest that could severely impact American cattle production.
The strategy, aimed at preventing NWS from spreading northward from Mexico into the United States, has received backing from political leaders and stakeholders within the agricultural sector. According to Jodey Arrington's website, USDA announced the establishment of a sterile fly facility in South Texas. Chairman Jodey Arrington told journalists, "The announcement by USDA establishing a sterile fly facility in South Texas takes the fight to the screwworm and defends Rural America from this outbreak."
Secretary Brooke L. Rollins, in her assertion of the urgency of the directive, stressed the protective measures being put in place, including the construction of additional sterile fly production facilities. "We have assessed the information on the ground in Mexico and have determined we must construct an additional sterile fly production facility in the United States to stop the northward advancement of this terrible pest that is threatening American cattle production," Secretary Rollins stated, as per arrington.house.gov. This move is seen primarily as a measure to safeguard the nation's self-sufficiency in food production and to fortify its borders against agricultural threats.
According to arrington.house.gov, support for the USDA initiative extends to Texas state leadership as well. Texas Governor Greg Abbott highlighted the vital role of Texas in feeding not just the nation, but the world—and the endangered security of that role due to the NWS. "Texas agricultural producers feed the world, with our state’s food and agriculture sector supporting over 2 million well-paying jobs and creating over $867 billion in total economic impact," Governor Abbott expressed. He also emphasized the cooperative effort, stating, "Together, we will eradicate the threat from the New World screwworm to protect our nation's food supply and economy."
The USDA has established a sterile fly facility to breed and release hundreds of millions of sterile New World screwworm flies to reduce the risk of an outbreak. The USDA and Customs and Border Protection are monitoring ports of entry to prevent the pest from entering the U.S. borders.
