Today, residents of Washington Heights were prompted to evacuate their homes following reports of a gas leak. The leak, which originated at a mixed-use building on Amsterdam Avenue, led to nearly 100 people being displaced as emergency services responded to the call. Reports from NBC New York indicate that the call came in around 10:30 a.m., and the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) was joined by Con Edison crews on the scene.
The incident resulted in the evacuation of three buildings, with addresses 1989, 1993, and 1984 Amsterdam Avenue, affecting approximately 70 individuals according to information obtained by ABC7 New York. The FDNY, and Con Edison officials were said to have been working to determine the source of the leak, which was suspected to have been caused by construction workers who potentially struck a gas line. Operations to manage the leak continued for several hours into the day.
No physical injuries were reported in connection with the gas leak, though the incident caused considerable disruption to the local community’s routine. FDNY personnel remained on site to monitor safety conditions, while Con Edison technicians worked to address and repair the source of the leak.
