Former superintendent of Wellington Exempted Village Schools, Edward Weber, was caught up in a financial misstep that prompted a state audit revealing overpayment for excess vacation days. Today, auditors demanded repayment of $25,200.50, to which Weber complied, shelling out $4,211.05 from his pocket while the Variable Annuity Life Insurance Co. contributed an additional $18,599 on his behalf.
According to the Ohio Auditor of State news release, the audit, examining records from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024, found that in November 2023, Weber was paid for 50 of the 56 vacation days he had banked. Still, due to a system failure, these days were not struck from his leave balance. Consequently, in the following summer, he received an undeserved payout of $25,200.50. Reacting to this oversight, auditors suggested, "The District should implement procedures to ensure system leave balances are properly updated and accurately reflect proper accruals and usage."
It wasn't just Weber and the insurance company who footed the bill; a series of offsetting credits from the Internal Revenue Service, Ohio Department of Taxation, and the Regional Income Tax Agency rounded up the funds to cover the remaining balance. By Thursday, the financial discrepancy was settled in full.
