The Los Angeles community of West Hollywood is grappling with safety concerns after a woman was sexually assaulted while walking on a residential street earlier this month. According to the KTLA report, the incident occurred in the 1200 block of North Sweetzer Avenue shortly after midnight on August 13. The suspect, who remains at large, suddenly approached and sexually assaulted the woman before fleeing the scene.
Neighbors were alerted to the incident by the woman's screams. "Probably a little after midnight, I turned off the TV and I heard some screaming," a resident, Peter Dobson, told KTLA's Chris Wolfe. "I came outside, and saw the commotion at the end of the block and there was this poor girl who had apparently been assaulted and raped." Witnesses tried to assist the victim while another caught cell phone footage of the suspect as he made his escape.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department released detailed descriptions and photographs of the suspect whom they are still seeking to identify. According to their description, published on the Sheriff's Department's Facebook page, the suspect is a Hispanic male, aged 18-30, around 5 feet 6 to 5 feet 7 inches tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a dark long-sleeved sweater, dark shorts with a light-colored stripe, and a dark driving cap.
Community members expressed shock and concern over the incident. One neighbor highlighted the importance of vigilance, "You want to make sure there’s no one following you," while Peter Dobson advised, "If they’re walking home late at night, I suggest you always have friends with you," in a statement obtained by KTLA. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Special Victims Bureau is leading the investigation and is calling for anyone with information to come forward.
Authorities ask that anyone who can identify the man, or has any pertinent information, to contact the Special Victims Bureau at (877) 710-5273 or by email at [email protected], as per the CBS Los Angeles report. For those wishing to provide information anonymously, "Crime Stoppers" can be contacted at (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or by using the "P3 Tips" mobile apps and website.
