The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is preparing to issue an Incidental Take Permit for the eastern ribbonsnake, a state-endangered species, in connection with electrical infrastructure work in Door County. Wisconsin Public Service (WPS), a subsidiary of WEC Energy Group, will replace and remove electric lines in Peninsula State Park. The project includes abandoning about 1,790 feet of underground cables, removing overhead lines, and installing approximately 2,311 feet of new underground cables to maintain electric service in the park.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed that eastern ribbonsnakes are present in the work area, and some may be harmed or displaced during construction. However, the agency’s assessment determined that the project is not expected to cause long-term harm to the species, its habitat, or the broader ecological community. Work is scheduled to begin in October and will involve the use of small utility vehicles for line removal in wet meadow and forested wetland areas, both important habitats for the species.
To reduce impacts, conservation measures will be included in the permit. These steps include conducting construction outside the snake’s active periods and using gravel to backfill excavations to prevent hazards. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR)’s review concluded that, with these measures, the project is not likely to significantly reduce the eastern ribbonsnake’s chances of survival or recovery in Wisconsin. Further details can be found on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website.
