Wisconsinites with a keen eye for wildlife now have a chance to contribute to state conservation efforts. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is calling on residents to assist in monitoring the state's deer and game bird populations throughout August and September. Volunteers for Operation Deer Watch and the Game Bird Survey will help to gather data on these animals, providing valuable information about their reproductive success.
These citizen science initiatives are part of an effort to more accurately understand the balance of juvenile and adult animals—a key indicator of species health in the region. The DNR wants to encourage people from all walks of life to join in the surveillance. According to the Wisconsin DNR, "every submission helps us better understand how wildlife are doing throughout the state." This data collection will aid DNR scientists in making informed decisions regarding wildlife management.
Paul Frater, the DNR surveys coordinator, emphasized the importance of data from local communities. Frater said, "Wherever you are in Wisconsin, you can get involved and collect data in your area." This statement, obtained by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, reveals the intention to incentivize a collective approach, mobilizing community members as active participants in conservation science.
No registration is required for those eager to contribute to these surveys. Participants can easily record their observations using a mobile device with an app designed specifically for this purpose. However, the DNR advises those who choose to record sightings from a vehicle should only do so when the vehicle is safely stopped and not while driving.
