A 27-year-old woman was shot while driving on I-96 in Wayne County, and Michigan State Police are now conducting an investigation into the incident that occurred just after midnight. According to authorities, the woman was traveling westbound between Joy Road and W Chicago Avenue when she was approached from behind by another vehicle in the left lane, from which multiple shots were fired before the vehicle quickly fled the scene, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
After the shots were fired, the woman managed to pull over to the left shoulder and made her way to a nearby McDonald's on Grand River Avenue, where she made the emergency call. Meanwhile, westbound I-96 had to be closed temporarily to facilitate the search for evidence, which caused traffic disruption until approximately 3:15 a.m., as per a report by CBS Detroit. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was transported to the hospital and is reportedly stable, authorities noted.
Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw, in a statement obtained by Audacy, said, “Troopers located items of evidence along the freeway,” also adding that troopers were working hard to determine a motive for the shooting and to get a better description of the suspect vehicle. The investigation for the suspect remains ongoing and law enforcement is reaching out to the community for assistance.
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the event or has pertinent information to step forward and contact either Michigan State Police at 855-MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 800-SPEAK-UP.
