The Woodward Dream Cruise, a staple for classic car enthusiasts and the local community, is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary this Saturday. The one-day juggernaut of chrome and nostalgia will kick into high gear from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with more than one million attendees expected.
Launched in 1995 as a simple fundraiser for a soccer field, the event now runs through nine cities along Metro Detroit's Woodward Avenue, which include Ferndale, where it all started, up to Pontiac in the north. As per ClickOnDetroit, the cruise is free to attend, and parking is available at several municipal spots in the participating communities, but be warned – these spaces fill up faster than a Hemi on a quarter-mile strip.
For those who eschew the hassle of driving to the event, the SMART bus service offers a pragmatic solution. With complimentary rides running along Woodward Avenue, this service allows attendees to hop on and off at will, making the cruise's numerous events within each city easily accessible. WXYZ, an official broadcast partner of the Dream Cruise, notes that the shuttles operate from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., catering to the scores of people eager to partake in the automotive revelry.
Merchandise, because there's always merchandise, ranges from the expected apparel to the more unique collectibles and can be bought at various tents dotted from Ferndale to Pontiac or online for those who prefer to shop from the comfort of their not-so-classic couch. Locations for these tents were detailed by FOX 2 Detroit, including spots at Berkley's corner of West 12 Mile Rd. and Woodward Ave, as well among several others.
