Milwaukee saw an incident last week involving a police shooting after a traffic stop turned foot chase. Kenneth Cubero, 21, faces charges after officers tried to stop him near 12th and Greenfield, as reported by FOX6 News. The events unfolded around 11:27 p.m., when Cubero, after initially stopping, fled and allegedly dropped a firearm before being shot by a pursuing officer.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office has charged Cubero with obstructing an officer, a situation that escalated when he ignored commands to halt, according to a statement Chief Jeffrey Norman gave to reporters, detailed by WISN. Cubero's attempt to retrieve the dropped firearm was what led to the shooting, with no other individuals harmed in the incident. The charges he faces could result in up to nine months in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.
Recovery of the firearm and 9 grams of marijuana from Cubero's car was also reported by TMJ4 News. The Milwaukee Police Department has indicated that additional charges could be forthcoming related to the possession of marijuana found during the search. As part of the procedure, the officer involved has been placed on administrative duty while investigations continue.
Body camera footage from the shooting is required to be released within 14 days, as per department policy. Chief Norman has confirmed that neither of the officers involved were injured during the chase and, the subsequent shooting. Cubero, who suffered non-fatal injuries, is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, facing the obstruction charge laid against him, as per TMJ4 News.
