On October 7, the Michigan Public Service Commission will require all local calls in Detroit to use 10-digit dialing, including the 313 area code and the seven-digit phone number. The change is being implemented to make room for the new 679 area code, which will serve as a companion to 313 as available numbers run low, according to the Michigan Public Service Commission.

Starting October 7, residents in Detroit and nearby suburbs will need to use 10-digit dialing. The change is in preparation for the new 679 area code, which will be assigned to new phone numbers once the 313 numbers are used up, expected in early 2028. Current 313 numbers will stay the same, and new numbers may begin receiving the 679 code after November 7, as reported by the Michigan Public Service Commission.

For everyday dialers and local businesses, this could mean reprogramming equipment and updating phone lists as seven-digit dialing changes to 10-digit dialing, requiring the 313 area code for all local calls. Long-distance calls will still begin with "1" before the area code. The Michigan Public Service Commission advises customers to check alarm systems, medical devices, and security equipment to ensure they work with the new system. Community access numbers such as 911 and 988 will not be affected. More information is available from service providers or on the Michigan Public Service Commission’s website.
