As President Donald Trump delivered a combative speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, around 50 protesters found themselves clashing with NYPD officers nearby. The demonstrators, attempting to block avenues leading to the UN, were promptly taken into custody. According to ABC7 New York, the NYPD reported that the arrests took place after activists tried and failed to obstruct Second Avenue, resulting in 48 summonses for disorderly conduct.
Meanwhile, New York Daily News detailed that the protesters, donning yellow reflective vests, staged sit-ins at prominent intersections, such as Third Ave. and E. 46th St., and E. 42nd St. and Second Ave. These activists were rallying against a variety of issues but were unified by a chant, "No Trump! No KKK!" as they held up signs proclaiming, "Trump does not speak for us." This opposition came during a morning marked by Trump's criticism of international leaders and the UN in his General Assembly address.
Trump's address to the UN touched on contentious global topics, including the situations in Gaza and Ukraine. His speech did not spare criticism, beginning with taking aim at his predecessor, Joe Biden, before proceeding to critique other world leaders and the United Nations itself. He accused the UN of failing to recognize conflicts he claimed his administration had resolved, not living up to its founding promises
The city was on high alert for protests with the convergence of high-profile leaders like Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York for the General Assembly. Ensuing the police preparations, one incident prior to Tuesday's protest involved a 38-year-old man apprehended on UN grounds. Police sources indicated that the individual, who was found wandering on the second floor without proper credentials, was arrested and charged with trespassing. Following the incident, the man was interviewed by the NYPD's intelligence division and the Secret Service, highlighting security concerns amidst these international meetings.
