Dangerously high carbon monoxide levels at an Ann Arbor hotel led to an evacuation last Saturday night. The Ann Arbor Fire Department responded to the EVEN Hotel Ann Arbor South around 11:10 p.m. after reports of a gas odor. Carbon monoxide levels in the basement were found to be close to 200 parts per million, which posed a serious risk, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
The hotel near Briarwood Mall, which provides transportation to University of Michigan football games, was occupied by guests attending the game against Central Michigan and the university’s Parent & Family Weekend. No injuries were reported. The Ann Arbor Fire Department determined that four malfunctioning water heaters caused the high carbon monoxide levels. Gas service to the equipment was shut off, and ventilation was carried out using fire department and facility fans.
According to the City of Ann Arbor Fire Department on their Facebook page, “Carbon monoxide levels in the basement were found approaching 200 ppm, prompting the evacuation of the hotel.” DTE Energy confirmed the condition and later verified safe levels after several hours of ventilation. Guests were allowed to return once the building was cleared.
