An Ann Arbor man, aged 20, tragically died following a collision with a deer while operating his motorcycle. The accident occurred yesterday near the intersection of Jackson and Worden avenues, as reported by WWJ Newsradio. Ann Arbor Police responded to the incident around 12:50 a.m. and found the motorcyclist with severe injuries. He was promptly transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries later.
Further details from The Detroit News reveal that the young man was traveling east on Jackson Avenue when he struck the deer and crashed. This incident adds to the statistics highlighting the dangers of motorcycling; Michigan experienced a 3% decrease in motorcycle crashes in 2023, with 3,056 incidents down from the previous year. Even more disturbing is the rising trend in deadly encounters with wildlife, where fatal deer-involved crashes jumped an alarming 73% to 19 in 2023.
The dangers posed by deer on Michigan roads are increasingly alarming, as the Country Herald indicates. Daylight savings and the deer's mating season contribute to higher activity during fall, leading to inevitable clashes between motorists and animals. In light of the recent tragedy, the Ann Arbor Police Department urges drivers to exercise heightened caution, particularly near wooded areas and during low-light conditions at dawn and dusk.
