Baltimore residents, brace yourselves for a wet and potentially stormy day. The National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC has issued a forecast discussion predicting widespread showers and a few strong thunderstorms due to a cold front crossing the region today. High pressure from eastern Canada and a tropical system in the western Atlantic look to play a role early next week, but for now, it's all about the immediate downpours and thunder.
As of early this morning, radar has been lighting up with shower activity primarily to the east of the Blue Ridge and down across the central Virginia Piedmont into eastern Virginia. Radar as of 3 am is becoming a bit more active with several areas of showers pushing across the region, according to the National Weather Service. Keep those umbrellas handy from daybreak onward, especially for the morning rush, as the weather service expects the coverage of showers to pick up, with the occasional thunderstorm thrown into the mix.
The outlook isn't any clearer for the afternoon and evening hours. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted an area east of the Allegheny Mountains with a Marginal Risk for severe weather for today, due to a cold front slowly moving across that could spell trouble between 4-8 pm. The main threat is damaging winds and heavy rainfall, with a secondary threat of an isolated tornado, as highlighted by the forecast. CAPE values between 1000-2000 j/kg and deep-layer shear around 40 to 50 kts might lead to organized storms materializing, such as line segments, or even a supercell or two.
Looking ahead to tonight, the front is expected to push east of the Baltimore area, with scattered showers persisting into the overnight. Winds will shift from the southwest to northwest, bringing a drop in dewpoints and preparing the city for a slightly less humid Friday morning. Lows will range from the upper 50s and low 60s west of the Blue Ridge to upper 60s across the I-95 corridor, forecasters indicated, while reminding residents that the weekend may feature continued shower and thunderstorm chances.
For aviators, it's been a bumpy ride with conditions varying significantly due to low clouds, fog, and showers across the region. "Cigs and vsbys continue to bounce around this morning," the National Weather Service noted. Marine conditions may also get choppy with an incoming cold front, though current winds remain under Small Craft Advisory levels for now.
Those living along the water should note that the likelihood of minor flooding remains at sensitive spots like Annapolis, especially with the higher tide later today. As a weather-wise community, we can navigate the storms, arm ourselves with the right gear, and stay updated by keeping tabs on the latest forecasts. After all, in Baltimore, a little weather won't dampen our day.
