In a recent announcement, State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates confirmed that Amir Barnes-Henderson, identified as a repeat violent offender, has been sentenced for the murder of 34-year-old Gary Lee Matthews, receiving a life sentence with an additional 35 years for related charges. This sentencing follows a fatal incident on Frankford Avenue, as reported by the Baltimore Police Department.
Given his history with law enforcement, having been previously convicted on several handgun misdemeanors, Barnes-Henderson was already prohibited from firearm possession. These past offenses echoed through the courtroom, as Bates emphasized, per the Office of the State's Attorney news release, the imperative of keeping individuals like Barnes-Henderson "off our streets and out of our communities." These sentiments were echoed in a statement that cited the work of both the police and Assistant State's Attorney Elizabeth Stock as central to securing the conviction.
The sequence of events leading to Matthews' death began with a verbal altercation at One Stop Liquor Store, resulting in the shooting on the 4900 Block of Frankford Avenue. Witnesses at the scene provided details that were critical to unfolding the tragic narrative, outlined in the Baltimore police report and subsequent prosecution.
