A Baltimore mother recently fell victim to a costly scam at the hands of a squeegee worker, losing $900 through a deceitful Cash App transaction. The incident, taking place last Sunday at the crossroads of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Washington Boulevard, quickly escalated from an act of gratitude to a swift theft, as reported by FOX Baltimore.
Shanay Plater, who was attempting to reward the squeegee worker for cleaning her windshield, did not have cash on her. The worker offered to input his Cash App details into Plater's phone, instead. Plater, perceiving goodwill, acquiesced; however, after entering her PIN, she was astounded to find that $900 had been sent to the worker. "When I put my pin in, it said, you have sent $900. And I said, you sent $900!? Why did you do that?" Plater said, as detailed by FOX Baltimore. Although she feared for the safety of her children and did not pursue the worker, she immediately reported the crime.
This scam is not an isolated incident, as CBS News Baltimore notes, Baltimore has seen a series of similar "Cash App" thefts this year, with some related to domestic issues and others involving squeegees. It's a troubling trend that has spurred the police to remind the public about the importance of safeguarding their devices and personal information, especially when dealing with strangers.
