After 20 years of operation, the Teavolve Café in Baltimore's Harbor East neighborhood is closing its doors permanently. The café’s owners shared the news through an Instagram post, expressing gratitude towards their patrons, "This has been an incredible chapter filled with so many cherished memories, delicious meals and unwavering support from all of you," they stated, as CBS News reported. With its last day announced as Friday, September 19, the community is preparing to say farewell to what has been a beloved part of the local dining scene.
The Teavolve Café, known for its non-traditional contemporary teahouse ambiance and extensive selection of loose leaf teas, local coffee, and a wide-ranging brunch and lunch menu, started in 2005 under the name Tea-ology. Owners Sunni Gilliam and Del Powell relocated and rebranded the establishment to Teavolve in 2008.
Teavolve's significance went beyond serving meals; the café connected with the community in remarkable ways, especially during challenging times. WMAR2 News highlighted the café’s collaboration with World Class Kitchen to provide fresh, individually packaged meals to critical areas of need, delivering sustenance to over 250 seniors at multiple local living facilities twice a week during the pandemic. In an interview with Eater DC, Governor Wes Moore named the restaurant as one of his Maryland favorites for comfort food, which underlines the café’s standing in the community.
