The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan has extended a Beach Hazards Statement for the area, cautioning locals and visitors alike about dangerous swimming conditions along the shores of Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties. Weather officials are reporting life-threatening waves reaching 3 to 6 feet, coupled with perilous currents set to persist from this morning through Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service is warning beachgoers to stay out of the water today and tonight due to dangerous waves and strong currents. High swim risks are in effect for Milwaukee County beaches south to Kenosha County, with moderate risks for Ozaukee County. Officials say life-threatening rip and structural currents are possible near piers and breakwalls. Conditions are expected to improve after this period.
Aside from today’s swim risk, no hazardous weather is expected through Tuesday. Milwaukee will be mostly cloudy today with a high near 68°F, then cool down to a mostly clear night. Warmer, sunny weather is expected Friday and into early next week.
The NWS reminds residents that lake conditions can change quickly, creating dangerous waves and currents even when the weather seems calm. Spotter activation isn’t needed, but people are urged to stay out of the water and away from piers and breakwalls. This advice is the best way to stay safe as Milwaukee heads into a calmer autumn.
