A recent road rage incident that turned violent in Bensalem Township has led to the Bucks County District Attorney announcing that a Bensalem officer's use of deadly force was justified. The tense encounter involving a handgun, multiple civilians, and law enforcement unfolded on August 2 and was thoroughly scrutinized by Bucks County Detectives.
The review process included numerous facets of evidence — witness statements, police radio communications, and footage, both from the officer's body-worn camera and surrounding business surveillance. Withholding the identity of the officer involved aligns with office protocol, as reported by the Bucks County Government official statement.
Officials concluded the officer was placed in a situation where an imminent danger to his life, as well as to other motorists and passersby, was presented by 44-year-old John Thomas Mathis of Levittown. Finding the officer's beliefs to be reasonable under the circumstances, District Attorney Jennifer Schorn determined that the officer's decision to discharge his weapon was justified. Mathis, who had reportedly aimed a handgun at another motorist and threatened robbery, was shot during the confrontation.
The incident took an escalatory turn when, just before the evening rush at 5:43 p.m., a motorist dialed 911 and conveyed that Mathis had pointed a handgun at his face along Bristol Pike. Arriving at the scene, the responding officer took up a tactical position aimed at safeguarding the reported victim. Amid issuing verbal commands, witnesses recount, Mathis was observed fleeing from his motorcycle.
