BMW of North America is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles from 2019 to 2022, including models like the Z4, 330i, X3, X4, 530i, 430i (standard and convertible), and the 2022 230i. The recall also includes 1,469 Toyota Supra vehicles made by BMW. According to Click2Houston, the recall is due to possible corrosion in the engine starter relay, which could overheat, cause a short circuit, and potentially start a fire even when the vehicle is not in use.
BMW is advising owners of recalled vehicles to park outside and away from buildings or other cars until repairs are made. Parts are limited, so BMW will notify owners in phases, starting with letters mailed on November 14, as reported by Fox Business. Owners should follow this safety guidance until their vehicle is confirmed safe or repaired.
Starting November 14, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will offer a VIN lookup tool on its website for vehicle owners to check if their car is part of a recall for a potentially fire-risk engine starter relay. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advised that "owners should park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until they either confirm their vehicle is not subject to the recall or have their vehicle remedied," as mentioned by Fox Business. BMW will replace the affected relay free of charge once parts are available, and owners will receive a second notice when this happens. BMW owners can contact BMW Customer Service at 800-525-7417, visit NHTSA.gov/recalls, call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236, or use the SaferCar app for updates.
