Brooklyn's Greenwood Heights neighborhood faced a significant crisis last night as flames engulfed an apartment building, leaving multiple individuals injured. According to ABC7 New York, the fire began in the basement of an apartment on 27th Street after 9:30 p.m. and quickly spread to the first floor. Firefighters battled intensely to contain the blaze before it could fully extend to the upper levels.
Officials report that a total of 12 individuals were injured in the inferno. The victims include six residents of the apartment, four valiant firefighters, and two NYPD officers who were all treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The combined effort of the firefighters managed to prevent the fire from reaching the second story of the building.
A subsequent account of the incident was provided by AM New York, detailing that the fire actually started on the first floor of the building at 205 27th St., just after 10:20 p.m. The narrative of firefighting efforts expanded to include Engine Company 228 and Tower Ladder 122, which responded promptly to the blaze. Over 100 FDNY members were dispatched, enacting a strategic assault on the fire with three hoselines to effectively suppress the flames.
During the tumultuous event, one firefighter briefly collapsed amidst the chaos but was quickly to be removed for safety by fellow FDNY members. Ultimately, seven people sustained injuries, pronounced stable upon transit to local hospitals. A local neighbor provided a chilling visual account, saying, "Smoke was blanking the street, you couldn’t see the full building," as obtained by AM New York. Firefighters achieved control of the fire by 11:30 p.m., while the cause remains under investigation.
