Beginning this Sunday, September 14, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), in partnership with contractor Brannan Sand and Gravel, LLC, will commence a significant resurfacing project on the Interstate 70 Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels (EJMT), as reported by CDOT. This project is set to not only rectify existing roadway issues but also aims to enhance the lifespan of the pavement, offering drivers an improved travel experience.
For those planning to traverse these routes, expect overnight delays due to alternating tunnel traffic, which the department warns could last up to 30 minutes, the work taking place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Sundays, and intervening weekdays up until the end of October, according to the detailed schedule provided by transportation officials. While work congestion is anticipated during the nighttime hours to prevent extensive daytime traffic disruptions, travelers are nonetheless cautioned to prepare for these delays, taking into account the planned restriping efforts and lane closures.
As the resurfacing project entails, both lanes of the I-70 EJMT will essentially see the removal of the current pavement to make way for a fresh layer of asphalt, thus addressing the all too familiar rutting problem on the well-traveled route. Such improvements are a precursor to the expected winter conditions, a proactive measure targeted at averting future roadway complications. Additionally, CDOT emphasizes the significance of work zone safety, urging drivers to obey speed limits, maintain a generous following distance, and stay vigilant of crews and equipment during the overnight work.
