The North Carolina Department of Transportation is setting the stage for an infrastructure update in Mecklenburg County, with a hefty $6.8 million contract having been awarded to a local contractor. Charlotte-based Blythe Development, LLC has been tapped for the job of replacing the aging bridge on Shopton Road over Coffey Creek in the county's southwest corridor, as per a recent NCDOT announcement.
Out with the old and in with the new – this could well be the unofficial motto for the Shopton Road bridge project. According to a NCDOT press release, the existing two-lane bridge, which has stood for 50 years, is slated to be replaced by a more modern structure. The shiny new span will extend 135 feet and feature three 11-foot lanes as well as sidewalks on both sides, a significant upgrade from its predecessor. However, locals should brace for detours – starting with the project's earliest commencement date of January 5, 2026, Shopton Road will be closed until the anticipated completion in the summer of 2027.
With every major construction project comes the headache of rerouted traffic, and this bridge replacement is no exception. Motorists accustomed to traversing Shopton Road will be diverted to an offsite detour, which will loop them around Steele Creek Road/N.C. 160, Interstate 485, and S. Tryon Street/N.C. 49, before bringing them back to Shopton Road. This navigational dance will be a familiar one for the better part of a year and a half, as the bridge that connects communities and facilitates commerce gets a much-needed facelift.
Beyond the structural enhancements, the project also includes an environmental component involving vegetation establishment. This aspect is projected to continue into early 2028, underscoring a commitment to not only engineering improvements but also landscape integration and restoration.
