Building on her work with Bangkok 96, Chef Genevieve Vang is opening a new sushi concept focused on gluten-free options. The Sushi Lounge, set to open inside the Detroit Shipping Company, will offer gluten-free tempura batter and tamari as a soy sauce alternative, according to ClickOnDetroit.
Established in 2018, the Detroit Shipping Company is a unique food hall made up of shipping containers and has hosted a variety of culinary attractions. Sushi Lounge is set to be the newest addition. The menu includes Detroit-themed items such as the "Whatuproll!" and the "Big Three Roll," with the MetroTimes noting Chef Vang's focus on creating a menu that is not just gluten-free but also showcases Motor City pride through its cuisine.
The collaboration between Chef Genevieve Vang and Detroit native Chef Jasmine White adds new expertise to Sushi Lounge's kitchen. In an interview with The Detroit News, White’s background includes training at the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas and experience at notable restaurants such as Wolfgang Puck and Benihana. The Sushi Lounge menu will include her creations, featuring items like sushi bombs and Sushi Stack & Snack, offering a distinctive approach to sashimi.
The new venue is offering a gluten-free menu while also catering to vegetarians and vegans. As reported by ClickOnDetroit, guests can expect a variety of rolls, desserts such as green tea mochi ice cream, and a selection of sake at the bar. The grand opening is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m., featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony and live DJ.
The Detroit Shipping Company will undergo another change with the arrival of Sushi Lounge. Currently home to food vendors like Momo Chap and Halal Street New York Style Street Food. For more information about Sushi Lounge and its offerings, residents can visit sushiloungedetroit.com.
