A Chicago man has been arrested and faces multiple charges after police uncovered what seems to be a multi-state identity theft and financial fraud scheme spread across Metro Detroit, where residents were duped by fraudulent text messages into waiting for new debit cards that never arrived, as they were intercepted by the suspect, the news comes from a series of reports by CBS News Detroit, clickondetroit, and FOX 2 Detroit.
David Andrew Williams, who is 30 years of age, was initially spotted by law enforcement after a UPS driver reported an attempted package interception leading to Troy police conducting surveillance and capturing Williams's attempted theft off a victim's porch, despite the package containing a debit card delivered safely on this occasion, a follow-up investigation revealed a wider pattern of fraudulent activities, targeting multiple residents who had received messages about compromised debit cards. According to the information obtained by CBS News Detroit, the notifications were fake and part of Williams's scheme to withdraw funds using the replacement cards mailed to the victims.
Williams, who has previously been convicted for similar crimes, was charged on September 21 with identity theft, stealing or retaining a financial transaction device without consent, and driving without a license, facing a $75,000 bond, the bond was set after his arraignment as stated by clickondetroit.
Further investigation allowed Troy Police detectives to link the suspect to the fraudulent texts, and after using search warrants and analyzing digital evidence, they connected Williams to numerous victims within the area Williams, who is currently on probation for his past offenses, may face additional charges as the investigation continues, Troy police implicated his connections to a possible multi-state crime network in the statements provided to FOX 2 Detroit. As of now, no further details about the spread and full extent of the criminal activities have been disclosed, but an ongoing inquiry suggests more charges could be forthcoming as authorities unravel this web of deceit.
