Early Monday morning, a child and an adult were wounded in a shooting in northeast Columbus, marking another incident in a string of gun violence that has shocked the community. The shooting, which occurred on the 1700 block of Blake Avenue around 6:30 a.m., left a juvenile in critical condition at Nationwide Children's Hospital and an adult in stable condition at Grant Medical Center, ABC6 News reported.
In Columbus's northeast side, first responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, with one individual promptly taken to the hospital for lifesaving care while another was described as stable, according to a report by WBNS. Details regarding the assailant or the motives behind the shooting remain scarce at this time.
The incident was not the only act of gun violence in the region, as Indianapolis was plunged into mourning after a mass shooting on its northwest side. According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the early Sunday morning occurrence resulted in the death of two adult males and the injury of five others, reported by WANE. The violent outbreak unfolded in a parking lot, and at least one person of interest has been detained in connection with the shooting.
"This is certainly heartbreaking, obviously, you know, we’ve had a busy night, our metro officers have been extremely busy, and we’re doing everything that we can to hold those accountable responsible," Sergeant William Young was quoted in a statement obtained by WANE. Witnesses relayed the quick escalation of events from a calm night to chaos, "I woke up from a nap, and I noticed the scene around me and it was normal," Perry Hilliard said. "Everyone was walking around, everyone was having a good time, drinking, socializing, and then out of nowhere, rapid gunfire … nonstop."
