Austin has opened its doors to a new domestic violence shelter, promising safety and stability for survivors. In a recent news release, the City of Austin, in partnership with Austin Public Health and The SAFE Alliance, announced the shelter's commencement this past Wednesday, aiming to provide 40-unit short-term housing and a comprehensive suite of services for those affected by domestic violence, along with their children. Mayor Kirk Watson was quoted as celebrating the initiative, adding, "Together, we’re building a healthier Austin where every family has the chance to heal and thrive," per the City of Austin.
The facility, a transformation of a former Super 8 Motel, hosts trauma-informed amenities and has replaced the motel's pool with an outdoor play area for children. The construction began back in August 2024, and the $16 million budget was covered by general fund and 2018 bond dollars. It is Austin Public Health Director Adrienne Sturrup who highlighted the city's commitment to "advocating for the resources needed to ensure the health and safety of our community," per the City of Austin. The SAFE Alliance, responsible for operating the shelter, offers various services including emergency transportation, safety planning, counseling, and legal advocacy, detailed in statements published by the city.
Emphasizing housing as a crucial element of violence prevention, Julia Spann, CEO of The SAFE Alliance, said, "When violence forces you to flee, you need more than a bed—you need a pathway to stability: safety planning, counseling, medical and legal care, and a bridge to permanent housing," per the City of Austin official website. The services, elucidated by the organization, extend from basic needs to educational and career support, with no discrimination in shelter access and prioritizing those at higher risk through their SAFEline hotline.
The SAFE Alliance, a nonprofit engaged in supporting survivors of abuse and violence, provides shelter for nearly 1,000 individuals nightly and aids over 6,000 people annually; their partnership with the City of Austin amplifies their capacity to facilitate recovery and preventative measures essential for public health, as outlined in the city's announcement.
