The City of Tacoma is calling for applications to fill six positions within its Community's Police Advisory Committee (CPAC), targeting representation from Council District Nos. 1, 4, and 5; a dedicated youth position for those aged 16-18, and two at-large positions. This volunteer committee serves as a consultative body to the city council on matters related to the policies and procedures of the Tacoma Police Department (TPD).
According to the City of Tacoma, the committee's tasks include reviewing the TPD's policies, rules, and training programs, streamlining the public complaint process, and facilitating dialogue between the police department and community members. The advisory panel is also tasked with providing recommendations to the city council, the city manager, and the chief of police on various police-related issues.
Applicants interested in these positions must be Tacoma residents who do not currently hold any other elective public office and must not be employed by the TPD or closely related to any of the department's personnel. In an effort to reflect the city's diverse demographic, the City encourages individuals from all walks of life, including but not limited to BIPOC, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, seniors, youth, immigrants, and refugees, to submit their applications.
Those selected for the CPAC will be required to complete training on the Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act, facilitated by the Washington State Office of the Attorney General, within 90 days post their appointment. This is in line with the city's commitment to creating an equitable and anti-racist organization that mirrors the diversity of its community. This requirement is in addition to participating in various community meetings and functions as part of their advisory role.
To apply, candidates must submit their applications through the official City Clerk’s Office by noon on October 13, 2025. Applications and further details can be found on the city's website, and for any queries or special requests regarding the application process—including to request alternate formats—interested parties may contact Elizabeth Wing at the City Clerk’s Office at [email protected] or call (253) 591-5178.
