Columbus State Community College has officially started the construction of a new academic building, OhioHealth Hall, squarely aimed at addressing the growing healthcare workforce demand. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Friday, signaling the beginning of the project, which looks to double the college's output of healthcare graduates in the coming decade. As reported by 10TV, the $66.5 million investment in the 80,000-square-foot facility is funded by bond proceeds with the endorsement of Franklin County residents.

Spanning three stories, OhioHealth Hall is set to feature everything from hands-on labs and simulation spaces to classrooms designed to facilitate learning in nursing, respiratory care, and surgical technology, among others. "Our healthcare programs lead to well-paying, meaningful jobs that also address key community needs," Columbus State president David Harrison proclaimed in a statement obtained by ABC 6. The project not only aims to enrich student education but also to actively contribute to the local and statewide healthcare ecosystem, which is anticipated to significantly grow.

In alignment with societal and demographic shifts, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services projects a 14.5% increase in healthcare support jobs from 2020 through 2030. The Aspen Institute further predicts a need for 9,000 additional healthcare workers by 2028 in central Ohio alone to accommodate the demands of an expanding and aging populace. This infrastructure expansion by Columbus State appears to be a timely initiative to proactively shore up the healthcare workforce.

Adding to the funds for construction, OhioHealth is bolstering the endeavor with a $25 million philanthropic endowment specifically designated for operating costs of the college’s expanded health care education programs. “We’re proud to invest in a talent pipeline our entire region will benefit from,” OhioHealth’s president and CEO, Stephen Markovich, MD, stated, foreseeing to comprehensively serve the diverse communities of the region as relayed by BizJournals. Moreover, the Columbus State Foundation is reportedly raising an additional $10 million, ensuring the new facility is fully equipped to meet educational demands.

OhioHealth Hall represents the latest significant construction effort by Columbus State since the erection of Mitchell Hall in 2019. It is part of a broader initiative supported by a $300 million Franklin County bond issue, state capital funding, and public-private collaborations that look to extensively modernize the campus and enhance its academic prowess.
