Washington, D.C. resident Randall Cornell Mack, 42, finds himself behind bars again, this time facing charges related to the robbery and murder of Steven Stewart, a 61-year-old wheelchair-bound man. As reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Mack along with co-defendant Phillip Palmer, was indicted on charges including conspiracy, armed robbery, and felony murder.
Despite Mack's plea of not guilty when arraigned before Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman on Wednesday, the details of the May 2 incident as outlined by investigators paint a grim scenario at 633 21st Street NE where Stewart was brutally attacked and shot multiple times, allegedly by Mack and Palmer, both being held until a detention hearing scheduled for September 19. Mack's not new to the penal system, his 2010 murder conviction and subsequent parole, which were revoked last year until his most recent release—a release that permitted this tragedy to take place.
Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department joined in the case announcement, highlighting the role of her department in the ongoing investigation. The prosecution is being led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Dinan. While an indictment signals the commencement of a legal battle, it is not indicative of guilt—Mack, like any accused, holds the constitutional mantle of innocent until proven otherwise, according to the same press release.
