Two U-Haul trucks were used in separate break-ins early Monday in Detroit and Royal Oak Township. The first incident happened around 3 a.m. at the Prestige Hookah & Smoke Shop, where suspects drove a truck into the building in an attempt to steal an ATM. Michigan State Police found the business damaged and the suspects gone. The truck, which had a broken steering column and damaged ignition, had not been reported stolen, according to FOX 2 Detroit.
Less than an hour after a U-Haul truck crashed into a hookah store in Ferndale, another U-Haul struck a check cashing business about five miles away, where suspects took an empty ATM. Police, fire crews, and utility workers responded to the first location for damage, while investigators continue to review the second incident. Authorities are working to determine if the two cases are connected. Witness Yancy Baker said, "I never thought that could have happened right here," and "When I first came up here, I didn't see nobody, I just saw the headlights...it's terrible, people can't even have nice businesses without people trying to steal from them," as reported by WXYZ.
Authorities are asking for information about both incidents. Michigan State Police urge anyone with details to call their Metro North Post at 248-584-5740 or provide anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers at 800-Speak-Up, as per Mlive. News outlets report that officials are seeking help from the public as the investigation continues.
