In Dearborn, local gardeners received recognition for their role in supporting the city’s sustainability goals. The Dearborn City Beautiful Commission recently announced the third annual group of honorees for the Sustainable Gardens Recognition Program, which highlights residential properties that promote environmental sustainability and help with flood control. This year, 18 gardens across six city districts were selected for their rain gardens, pollinator-friendly areas, and use of native plants.

Dearborn residents participated in efforts to improve the city’s appearance while addressing environmental challenges by creating landscapes designed for both aesthetics and functionality. Rain gardens were recognized for their role in reducing flooding. Other gardens were selected for their use of plants that support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, which play important roles in the local ecosystem. The program encourages more residents to include sustainable features in their yards, "Eighteen noteworthy sustainable gardens and landscapes were recognized by volunteer commissioners, based on a focused review of neighborhoods in Dearborn," according to the City’s announcement.

The winners are located throughout Dearborn, from 549 N. Elizabeth to 14621 Barclay, showcasing a variety of eco-friendly gardening methods. Their efforts contribute to a larger goal of enhancing environmental resilience across the community. Photos of the 18 recognized gardens are available on Dearborn’s official website and Facebook page.

The City Beautiful Commission, chaired by Rene Ziaja, aims for the program to encourage more Dearborn residents to engage in sustainable gardening. According to the City of Dearborn, "The Commission hopes its recognition program will inspire other residents to consider including some sustainable elements in their landscaping, supporting Mayor Hammoud's dedication to advancing beneficial green infrastructure." In addition to promoting green efforts, honorees will receive a congratulatory lawn sign and an invitation to a special dinner next year, hosted by the Commission and Mayor Hammoud.

Beyond recognizing individual efforts, the program reflects Mayor Hammoud’s wider initiative to promote environmental stewardship. The City Beautiful Commission has expanded its environmental focus to Dearborn’s schools by organizing events such as Clean-Up Parades, tree plantings, and anti-littering campaigns.
