A child custody dispute in Detroit escalated into a fatal shooting yesterday, resulting in one death and one injury. The incident took place around 4:15 p.m. on the 600 block of Delaware Street, detailed ClickOnDetroit. Police reported that during a heated confrontation, a man shot and killed his child's mother's fiancé. A witness at the scene responded by firing at the shooter, who is now hospitalized and in police custody.
Delaware Street, siding on a stretch between 3rd Avenue and Bethune Court, became the center of a tragic scene as a result of the dispute. Detroit Police Cmdr. Matthew Fulgenzi, speaking with FOX 2 Detroit, stated, "A third person witnessed the shooting and returned fire on the child's father," which led to the father sustaining at least one gunshot wound. After shooting the victim, the assailant drove himself to a local hospital, where he was later arrested in connection with the incident.
The deadly outcome of this domestic issue comes despite the city's recent downtrend in violent crime. According to The Detroit News, Detroit has experienced significant declines in violent crimes; the past year marked the lowest number of homicides in nearly six decades. The current year shows a further 15% drop in homicides, a 25% decline in shootings, and a 30% plunge in carjackings.
Investigators note, as taken from a statement by Fulgenzi to The Detroit News, that the dispute sprang from an argument between the two men, with the child's father allegedly pulling a gun, firing several shots at the victim. Following a series of deadly shootings in the area, this recent incident sheds light on the persistent danger of domestic and personal conflicts turning violent, challenging the strides made by the city in reducing crime overall.
